Course guides

Front covers

The primary aim when working with brochure front cover layout grids should be to incorporate the brand elements of La Trobe’s look and feel in a consistent way so that each document is identifiable as belonging to La Trobe.

Brochure front covers make strong use of colour and photographic images which are supported and strengthened by the consistent use of typography. The use of typography on the cover provides an immediate connection to the content and assists strongly in its identification.

The image area contains a photographic image treated as per the specification in these guidelines. The image should extend to the white border areas which sit 6mm from all four edges of the trim and fold.

Back covers

Back cover information should be kept to a minimum and contain important information only.

This information will usually include: key contact details, the University’s website address (or the most appropriate URL), a disclaimer relating to course information, and the University’s CRICOS provider number if the brochure has an overseas student audience.

The infinite possibilities symbol and accompanying tagline are currently incorporated on the back cover and/or the inside back cover.

Internal spreads

Examples of internal layout are included on this page. Headings, body text, tables. headers, pagination, call-outs and student profiles all follow a particular style.

Pages need to be designed and typeset according to these guidelines. As with the front covers, the primary aim when working with internal spread layout grids should be to incorporate the brand elements of La Trobe.

It is important to note that these guidelines are designed to help establish the layout system for A4 internal spreads. It is expected that designers evolve certain elements – including the text grid and the position and size of headings – to suit each individual layout or brochure.

Internal spreads should be uncluttered and contain as much white space as possible to encourage legibility.
